Holy Orders is the Catholic sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. Comprising three distinct degrees—the diaconate (deacons), presbyterate (priests), and episcopate (bishops)—the sacrament of Holy Orders confers an indelible spiritual character that consecrates the recipient for apostolic ministry, divine worship, and the governance of God’s people.

The Three Degrees of Sacred Ordination
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1554), Catholic ordained ministry exists in three interrelated levels:
The Episcopate (Bishops): Possessing the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders, bishops succeed the Apostles as shepherds of dioceses, teachers of the faith, and high priests of sacred worship.
The Presbyterate (Priests): Co-workers of the bishops, priests are consecrated to preach the Gospel, shepherd the faithful, and celebrate divine worship—especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the forgiveness of sins in Confession.
The Diaconate (Deacons): Ordained not unto priesthood, but unto ministry (ad ministerium), deacons serve the Church in works of charity, proclamation of the Gospel, assisting at the altar, and administering the sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony.
